Set up a Closed Facebook Group   

If you haven’t already done so, now is a good time to set up a closed Facebook group for your unit.  This is a great way to stay in touch with parents (and through them your girls).

1. Go to facebook.com – if you have an account, log in – if you don’t, sign up (it’s quick, easy and free).

2. Click/tap on Groups – this will look slightly different depending on whether you’re on a computer or other device.  On a computer screen you will find it in the list on the left-hand side. On a smart phone it is a little icon along the bottom.  Either way the icon is blue with little people.

3. Click/tap on Create New Group – on a computer this is a blue button ‘+ Create Group’, on a phone you need to scroll across the top to find ‘+ Create’.

4. Name your Group – keep it simple and obvious, so parents can find you.

5. Privacy – ensure your group is ‘Private’, this means only members will be able to see content and who the other members are.

6. Visibility – under ‘Hide group’ you do need the group to be ‘visible’ otherwise new parents won’t be able to find you.

7. Invite members – you will only be able to do this if any of your group members are already Facebook friends with you.  It doesn’t matter if not, you can invite people later.

8. Create your Group – click/tap on ‘Create’ or ‘Create Group’.  You now have a private Facebook group for your unit!

9. Add a picture to your Group page – click/tap on the little camera icon which gives you the option to ‘change group cover’, this will allow you to upload a picture from your phone or computer (try using the images available to download from the Girlguiding website).

10. Invite members to join – let your parents know you’ve set up a group and what it’s called.  They can then find you and ask to join.  As you’ve set up the group you will have admin rights, so you will get a notification when someone asks to join.

11. Write a post – get going and post a message by clicking/tapping in the white box where it says ‘write something’ and off you go… Once you’ve written what you want to say, click/tap on ‘post’.

12. Announcements – you can ‘pin’ an announcement to the top of the ‘news feed’ (that’s the list of posts you can see on your home page).  You may like to do this to explain the purpose of the group and/or group rules.  Write a post, as above, then click/tap on the three dots in the top right-hand corner of your post.  Click/tap on ‘Mark as announcement’.  To ensure it always shows at the top of the news feed, click/tap on those three dots again and click/tap ‘pin to top’.

If you’re not confident with Facebook – don’t worry – it’s mostly self-explanatory.  Have a play around and try things.  Ask others for help if necessary, there are plenty of other leaders out there who can help.  The more you use it, the more you’ll get used to it.  Enjoy!

2020 Greening Great Britain – Growing Connections funding

The RHS is inviting groups with creative ideas to improve local spaces, and grow connections in their local community through plants and gardening to apply for up to £500 for their project (see online details and application guidance).

 We will be accepting applications from;

  • West Yorkshire – Leeds
  • North Yorkshire – Harrogate, York and Selby
  • South Yorkshire – Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham, Chesterfield, Bassetlaw

 We are offering:

  • Hands-on support and advicefor your project from an RHS Community Outreach Advisor; for example:

– Consultation and project planning

– Horticultural advice and plant selection

– Skills training and workshops

– Aftercare and maintenance advice

– Or tell us what help you need for your project

  • £500 grant to support your project.

All RHS community gardening organisations are eligible to apply for this RHS funding, but don’t worry if you are not already registered it is easy to sign up online:

Yorkshire in Bloom (community gardening groups)

Campaign for School Gardening (schools, uniform groups and youth groups)

and Affiliated Societies (gardening clubs)

National Memorial Project

I’m contacting you from Big Ideas, we’re a community engagement organization who run creative commemoration projects for regional participation. We have a new project we thought you might be of interest to you. It’s a really lovely project and a great creative activity for groups to take part in. I have outlined some information about the project below.

Foundation Stones is a unique project that asks you to paint a commemorative stone to be placed within the foundations of the new UK Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre. You and your group are invited to paint a stone in remembrance of the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered in the Holocaust and all other victims of Nazi persecution. You can also choose to dedicate your stone to those murdered in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Each Foundation Stone will represent a commitment from communities across the United Kingdom to learn from the past and to build a future free from all forms of prejudice, discrimination and hatred.

Leeds Half Marathon – call for volunteers

Following the success of the 2019 Run For All Event Season I am now beginning to prepare for another great year of events in 2020.

I would like to get in touch with you regarding volunteering opportunities at the Leeds Half Marathon, which in 2020 is taking place on Sunday 10th May.  As you can imagine, each year we require thousands of volunteers in a variety of roles to ensure our Run For All events go without a hitch and the participants have a fantastic time. It would be amazing to have your support whether that’s a group that can volunteer or individual volunteers; your support is greatly appreciated.

Firstly, let me introduce ourselves; Run For All is part of the lasting legacy of the late amateur athlete and fundraiser Jane Tomlinson CBE, who made headlines around the world by taking part in a series of incredible endurance events – despite being diagnosed with an incurable cancer. By 2007 her declining health meant she was unable to take part in any more extraordinary undertakings. However, using the money she raised on her epic American adventure, Jane was able to sow the seeds for the Run For All Leeds 10K – the cornerstone of what would become her continuing legacy.

Today that one run has grown Run For All into one of the UK’s biggest not-for-profit events companies, providing a fundraising vehicle for a huge number of local and national charities. Every year tens of thousands of people take part in our popular events – running for charity, for a personal challenge or just for fun.

Each year, we require thousands of volunteers in a variety of roles to ensure our Run For All events go without a hitch and the participants have a fantastic time. Your support really is greatly appreciated by all. Every volunteer will also receive a volunteer goody bag with a t-shirt and snacks for the morning.

We have a number of roles available on event day: 

  1. Route Marshals
  2. Baggage Marshals
  3. Drink Station Marshals
  4. Finish Processing Marshals – handing out water/finishers goody bags to the runners

If you would like further information on the roles available or if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, I am more than happy to help. We work with a number of local groups and it creates an valuable opportunity and experience to get involved with a community mass participant running event.

Once again, hundreds of Eventeers join our community each year and without you Run For All events would not be possible. Our Eventeers are ambassadors whose enthusiasm and commitment creates an atmosphere that sets out events apart from others – high quality, fun, For All.

Young Healthcare Hero

Hi,
I’m writing to make sure you are aware that nominations are currently being taken for the Yorkshire Evening Post Health Awards – and that there is a category for a young healthcare hero aged 16 or under.This award is for a young person who has use first aid skills to help someone, campaigned on a health issue or raised funds to support a health charity.

Come and have your say weekend…

To All Girlguiding Leeds adult volunteers,

This is your opportunity to make suggestions, voice any concerns and help form the future of guiding in Leeds in a positive and structured manner.

Our volunteers are the most important part of guiding in Leeds and we would like to invite you to come along and have your voice heard at our drop-in weekend.  Please call in and spare us half an hour of your time (or a bit longer if you can).

We would like to meet as many volunteers as possible that represent units from across the whole of Leeds – we’ll even provide a cup of tea (coffee/juice) and a biscuit!

I’ll be there with other members of the County Team and we really look forward to meeting as many of you as can make it.
