Can you help?

5th Roundhay Brownies (Oakwood, near Roundhay Park, Leeds) need leaders to save the unit from closure.

Careers are taking some of the existing leaders away from Leeds, and changes in circumstances for the rest of us mean we will very reluctantly have to close the unit at the end of this term if we can’t find leaders to take over.

We are currently a small unit, but with a waiting list of girls from two Rainbow units in the District, numbers are set to increase from January. The unit is solvent and meets on Thursday in a well appointed room with plenty of storage for the unit’s resources. There is a supportive group of parents prepared to help on an ad hoc basis.

If you are interested in helping this unit with a 70 year history to continue to deliver inspiring Guiding to the girls of North East Leeds please get in touch with us at 5throundhay@gmail.com

Scope Role Models

Scope Role Models is a programme which offers free personal, social and health education (PSHE) sessions on disability to secondary schools, colleges and youth clubs in West Yorkshire. 89% of students felt less awkward about disability after attending.

Sessions are hosted by a Scope member of staff and co-facilitated with a disabled role model volunteer.  They consist of:

  • a talk about how attitudes and stereotyping impact the lives of disabled people.
  • question and answer time with the students.

Dispel myths and challenge perceptions around disability with Scope Role Models.

Anna McNuff

Anna McNuff – Speaking at West Wakefield Methodist Church:

Girlguiding Waterton Westgate would like to invite you to the following event:

What is it?

Anna McNuff is an adventurer and Girlguiding Ambassador who is currently running the length of the UK barefoot, and would like to meet as many Girlguiding members as possible during her trip.

She is passing through Wakefield on the 17th August, and we have invited her to West Wakefield Methodist Church about her life and her adventures. Anna’s talk will cover her previous adventures, and will encourage all to greet new challenges head on, and to view each one as an opportunity to learn and grow.

We would like to invite you, the local Guiding Community to join us to meet Anna, and hear about her life as an adventurer. She will provide approximately an hours talk, including a Q & A session. Anna is also willing to sign any of her books. Refreshments will also be served afterwards.

 Where and When:

17th August 2019

Doors open 5.30: Talk 6 – 7.00pm

West Wakefield Methodist Church, Thornes Road, Wakefield, WF2 8UR

 How Much:

The talk will be free to attend, however we would like to suggest a voluntary donation of £2, which will be donated to Girlguiding.

 Who is it for:

As this is a talk, rather than an activity, we recommend it is suitable for Brownie age upwards. Please make a decision as a unit how you would like to advertise to your group – we suggest either inviting girls and their parents (Which requires no consent forms), however you may prefer to organise to attend as a unit (Which means you will need to arrange consent forms and a home contact). Leaders, Trefoil Guild Members, Supporters are very welcome to attend without girls!

We have to provide expected numbers to Anna’s team at the beginning of August, so please could you let me know expected numbers by July 31st on kirstylthorpe@gmail.com

Fundraising Opportunity

The reason for my contact today is to promote a free fundraising project that we have been running for about 7 years now.

Please see the flyer below which hopefully tells the story, but effectively:

  • Zero cost to any children’s group
  • Minimal input/effort required from group leaders
  • All orders & payments taken online
  • Up to 20% commission for the individual group running the scheme.

We worked with over 85,000 children last Christmas with groups from Land’s End to John O’ Groats and some groups received over £800 commission.

I’m sure you have questions so please do ask.

Kind regards

James

Poppy Quest

The Royal British Legion are hosting an event and wondered whether Girlguides would like to get involved? Poppy Quest has just taken place in London this weekend which a few guide groups came along and took part in and had a great time. We are hosting the same event in Liverpool and Birmingham and would love to have more Girlguide groups getting involved!

Poppy Quest is a 10k sponsored ‘discovery’ walk suitable for all ages and abilities. Participants will be armed with a map to navigate our trail around the city and a set of questions to answer en route, which will get them to explore the city’s rich history. Participants can walk solo, as part of a group with friends and family, or even with their dog!

Attached are both flyers to the Birmingham and Liverpool event, and included below is the link to the Birmingham event page below for more information.

Freedom4Girls

My name is Victoria and I am the Education Project Manager for charity Freedom4Girls. Freedom4Girls are a UK based charity working across leeds, West Yorkshire and East Africa, supporting young women and girls with access to a choice of free, safe, menstrual protection and an education programme that focuses on confidence building and self esteem around periods.

We would love to partner with any of the Girl Guides groups in Leeds to not only provide a supply of free products but to also deliver the education programme for your beneficiaries.
We have so far delivered to a number of youth groups and have received amazing feedback from the groups about their satisfaction with the programme and the support they feel from receiving the programme.

If this is something you and any of the Leeds groups are interested in, please do contact me and we can possibly arrange a meeting to discuss options.

Many thanks for your time
Kind regards
Victoria

And they all fit under our six programme themes.
